Chrysler will be the first car manufacturer to eliminate power cords by offering in-vehicle wireless charging. The technology will debut in the all-new 2013 Dodge Dart that arrives in the second quarter of this year and allows for charging of smartphones and MP3 players.
The Dodge Dart has a "dramatic design" with full width LED tail lamps, a performance-focused engine, and a wealth of safety features including break assist and blind spot monitoring.
Chrysler said the car delivers "world class" aerodynamics and is based off the Alfa Romeo Giulietta. The car offers 12 exterior colors, 14 interior colors, three transmissions, six wheel choices and five trim levels.
"At Mopar, we look for every single opportunity to make our customers' lives easier. Our industry-first in-vehicle wireless charging system is the perfect solution for those connected customers who are always on the go," said Pietro Gorlier, President and CEO of Mopar, which is Chrysler's Group LLC service, parts and customer-care brand, in a statement.
The wireless charging is accessed through a "seamlessly integrated wireless bin," which measures 8.27 inches by 9.5 inches by 3.25 inches and is placed just below the center stack and in front of the center console. It has a built-in charging grid which is activated when customers place a battery-powered device. The grid begins charging when the car is started.
Chrysler is offering wireless charging nationwide across all dealerships for the first time. As Digital Trends noted, this will hopefully become an industry standard among other car manufacturers.
The grid requires a compatible phone case, which is included with the grid and works with a "variety of smartphones."
The 2013 Dodge Dart has a 1.4-liter engine that produces just over 160 horsepower, while the top-of-the-line 2.4-liter engine produces 184 horsepower, with three engines on offer: the 2.0-liter Tigershark, 1.4-liter Turbo MultiAir and 2.4-liter Tigershark MultiAir2. 2013 Dodge Dart can push 40 miles per gallon and is available for $15,995 onwards.
The Mopar in-vehicle wireless charging grid is available for $199.99.
