Samsung had already unveiled its flexible AMOLED display at the Consumer Electronics Show last year. Now, the Korean tech giant has named its next generating screens as YOUM and will start production of YOUM displays soon.
At the moment, we do not know what on the earth this 4 word acronym means but one thing we know is that the technology is revolutionary. These flexible displays are unbreakable to a large extent and they might become common in upcoming Android phones.
Recently it was reported that Samsung had filed a petition in U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for YOUM trademark that consists of two types of displays - one is flexible plain display and another is a stylish version of the former.
YOUM is a simply a Super AMOLED screen but with flexible properties. YOUM is made up of four layers. Polarizing layer is at the top followed by Encap film layer. Below the Encap film is organic layer featuring display's LED. TFT film sits at the bottom.
YOUM display is thinner, lighter and more rugged than LCD and OLED displays. Traditional LCD display consists of four layers while OLED display, despite having same four layers uses Glass substitute in Encap and TFT layers instead of thin Film material. Removing of glass out of the way voids glassy-breakable property of the screen. Film layer are thinner and lighter and makes the display more like a bendable plastic.
Samsung's YOUM display has earned a big name for its lightweight, flexible and unbreakable properties making it ideal for rugged smartphones.
The South Korean tech giant had already showcased its flexible display at CES 2011. The 4.5-inch display featuring WVGA resolution (480 X 800 pixels) was less than 0.3-inch thick. According to the latest reports, Samsung will begin mass-production of YOUM display in second quarter of 2012. However, the second biggest Korean tech giant - LG - is ahead of Samsung in the race to manufacture plastic displays.
Last week, LG CEO Koo Bon-Joon announced that the firm has started mass production of world's first flexible plastic display.
