In today's modern society, the internet is pretty much part of our lives. A large number of internet users prefer using Wi-Fi instead of the old internet routers that need LAN cables that at some point, irritate you especially if it gets tangled or accidentally removed just when you were about to download your files. And as Wi-Fi routers seem more common and in demand, techno firms have been trying to also move with the demand and improve the experience more.
With the users demand and needs in mind, one particular firm has come out with a router that acts and advertized almost like a spy. The recently released "Luma" is marketed as a router which will easily provide your home with strong Wi-Fi signals and at the same time, give the owner complete control of who and when it can be accessed.
Luma comes in a pack of three's which you can place wherever you like throughout your house. Once you have them placed where you wanted them to be, the routers will form a single network so connecting to different routers based on your location within the house will not be a problem. Imagine not having to stay on a certain room because of connection issues or remembering a couple of passwords for a particular router. It seems interesting enough isn't it? But that is just one of the features that this router claims to have.
Luma claims that you won't ever have to spend time being baffled with your settings pages. The router is made to be managed only though a single "companion app." This companion app can do many things, one of which is showing what devices are connected to your network and what they are doing. This means that the admin will be able to know what servers you are connecting with, what websites are currently being accessed with specific time stamps.
Luma also includes activity tracking in their app. This is made with monitoring kids in mind. It also comes with a content filter that will enable the owner to lock certain users into sites that are rated G, PG, PG-13 and etc. Request to be able to bypass the filter can be sent by one blocked user to the owner and they can discuss it though a chat window which can be activated.
The app can also be used by parents to monitor whether their kids are doing their homework or just browsing the net. Aside from this, the app also has a feature where the owner can set time limits to internet usage. While this may be a great parenting tool, it does raise concern of privacy issues for some.
The tracking feature might be great for tracking your kids, but it could be quite invasive. Screenshots of everyone's activities connected to your router will be gathered and collated, similar to Instagram, and will be stored for a year. The users can temporarily hide their activity but it won't be permanent. The administrator still has the power to unlock it and check their activities later. This could pose an issue, especially if the admin uses it to spy on another person other than his kids' activities.
Aside from tracking, Luma also boasts of its security features. This router is able to analyze traffic and detect whether there are intruders in the network or if there is a malware infecting the server. Aside from that, Luma will be regularly scanning the devises connected to your network if there are users set up using saved passwords. Once this is detected, the admin is sent a message to change their password immediately.
Another feature is the ability of the admin to grant or revoke a user's access without giving out the password. If one wants to access, they can send a message that will notify the admin, and he/she will decide to grant you access or not and for how long you will be able to connect.
