Android 4.4 KitKat is the very latest version of Google's popular mobile operating system and it's coming to the Nexus 7 and Nexus 10.
Google has just announced that its Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 tablets are finally getting a taste of the new Android 4.4 KitKat on Wednesday, Nov. 13. According to the company, the Nexus 4 smartphone and the cellular version of the Nexus 7 are next on the list to get the update.
"Starting today, Nexus 7 (2012 and 2013) and Nexus 10 will be getting a tasty update to Android 4.4, KitKat. Stay tuned, Nexus 4 and Nexus 7 versions with mobile data will be getting the update soon!" announced the company in a Google+ post.
Google first unveiled that its new OS version would be called Android 4.4 KitKat, as the company had signed a deal with Nestle to use its tasty brand. After a while of speculations, anticipation and built-up excitement, Google finally announced the Nexus 5 last month - the first device to rock the latest Android 4.4 KitKat.
Nexus devices are so popular partly due to the Nexus experience, which guarantees timely updates as soon as a new Android version is released. With Android 4.4 KitKat out of the bag and up and running on the Nexus 5, owners of other Nexus devices were eagerly waiting for the update. The rest of the Nexus lineup are set receive KitKat first, after which the new software will start to roll out to non-Nexus devices as well.
HTC and Motorola (which is now owned by Google) have already promised to update select devices to the newest software, and more manufacturers are expected to announce their rollout plans for Android 4.4 KitKat soon.
Google has touted that Android 4.4 KitKat is a "smarter, more immersive" experience, boasting a revamped messaging interface, improved multitasking and better user interfaces for apps, a built-in pedometer feature, and many more neat goodies.
Android 4.4 KitKat is also expected to help narrow Android fragmentation, as it should be able to work even on older hardware with lower specifications. It will surely take a while for the latest version of Android to make a wide rollout to various devices, but for now Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 owners can rejoice and enjoy the new firmware.
