Galax GTX 1070 Katana is World's First Single-slot Air-cooled 1070 GPU
Charles LimIt goes without saying that all of the Nvidia's high-end graphics cards, namely the GTX 1080 and the GTX 1070, will be taking up two expansion slots to accommodate their cooling fans. This, of course, includes all of the other third-party add-in card (AIC) offerings. However, Galax is now aiming to change that fact by offering what looks to be the world's first single-slot air-cooled GTX 1070 GPU in the market.
Some AIC manufacturers do offer GTX 1070s with water cooling blocks that make it occupy only one PCI-e lane, but Galax' new GTX 1070 Katana is the first product to accomplish the feat with an air-cooling setup, as per a report from PC Gamer. The new GPU measure just 16mm in thickness and will be perfect for those who are looking for a sleek but powerful GPU they can use for their micro or mini ATX gaming systems.
Additionally, PC enthusiast can also take advantage of the Galax GTX 1070 Katana's size by slapping in another unit in order to get more than double the performance. The GPU itself utilizes what Galax calls its turbo radiator system. The system is essentially comprised of a custom cooling solution that features a copper cooling fin and a vapor chamber. The system is designed to efficiently draw heat away from the GPU's components, while also being thin enough to fit in the device's slim casing.
According to Anandtech, Galax has apparently also built a custom PCB for the GTX 1070 Katana. The GPU is also reportedly built with high-quality components that include an optimized electrical circuit. Despite its sleek design and compact air-cooling solution, Galax was still able to squeeze out a little bit of frequency from the 1070s factory clock speeds.
The Galaxy 1070 katana comes with a base clock of 1,518 MHz and a boost clock of 1,708 MHz. While this isn't really that much of an increase from the 1,506 MHz base and 1,683 MHz boost of the reference 1070, it is still impressive given the GPU's space restrictions. Galax has yet to officially announce the card's actual release date and pricing, which means that fans will have to wait until the company gives out an update.
