Along with introducing its latest mobile operating system earlier this month, Apple also handed iOS 6 beta to developer community. After two weeks, Apple is now rolling out second beta of iOS 6 as an OTA (over-the-air) update. The update addresses system bugs along with performance improvements and addition of some minor features.
The iOS 6 Beta 2 OTA update is 322MB and 299MB in size for iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S users respectively. In case of the new iPad, the OTA update is 497MB download. As the update if fully downloaded and installed, changes can be noticed right away. The first addition is animations to the install icon with spinning gears. "The Enable 3G" toggle option is also back, after being removed in the original beta version of iOS 6. However, it is still missing from iPhone 4S.
The app is also available on iOS Dev Center. However, you must be a registered developer to download the update. Labeled as build 10A5338d, the update is compatible with iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch devices.
In case you are not a developer and want to get hands on iOS 6, you have to wait until fall. According to Apple, there are more than 200 new features in iOS 6 including Facebook integration, new Maps app and Siri for iPad. The new iOS will also enable FaceTime over cellular network, but the offer is limited to iPhone 4S users only.
Meanwhile, iPhone Dev Team has released RedSn0w jailbreak tool for iOS 6 beta. The tethered jailbreak is compatible with A5 devices only, including iPhone 4 (GSM/CDMA) and iPhone 3GS.
The second beta build is up for a limited time and expiring shortly. Nevertheless, we can expect several other iOS 6 beta builds from Apple before the public launch of iOS 6 this fall. These builds will bring bugs fixes and improvements to iOS 6 as well as addition of new features. It is to be noted that Apple released as many as seven iOS 5 beta builds last year before the launch of iPhone 4.
