Motorola Droid Razr Maxx Launched in the UK: What You Need to Know

The Motorola Droid Razr Maxx has finally launched in the UK. The latest Motorola smartphone with the Razr moniker is an Android smartphone with impressive specs and most notably, it comes with a huge battery that offers the longest talktime ever.

Here's a look at Motorola Droid Razr Maxx features:

Display

The phone has a 4.3-inch, 960x540 display, which, for an Android handset, is one of the higher-end devices. It's not the largest screen, though: the Samsung Galaxy S3 has a 4.7-inch screen. A bezel is also around the side of the screen, which is "rather chunky," according to Reg Hardware. As the Web site noted, the Galaxy S3 has a bigger screen yet smaller dimensions.

The screen also uses Gorilla Glass, which makes it resistant to scratches.

Design

The phone has a square-shaped body, moving away from the rounded form factors common in most Android devices. There also isn't a removable battery back, which results in no comfortable area to hold the phone. It also has a splashguard covering components, ensuring water doesn't cause internal damage.

Internals

Inside is a 1.2GHz dual-core processor with 1GB of RAM, launching with Android 2.3 Gingerbread. On performance, "navigation isn't as smooth as I'd like" according to Reg Hardware. Motorola said the phone will be updated to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, beginning Q2 2012.

An 8-megapixel camera is on offer with 1080p video recording. However, according to Reg Hardware, despite the camera boasting the same number of megapixels as the iPhone 4S, the camera lagged behind the picture quality of Apple's device along with the HTC One X and the Sony Xperia S.

However, the Droid Razr Maxx's battery is hard to beat. The battery is 3300mAh, causing the phone to be 2mm thicker. Motorola claims the battery results in 17.6 hours of talk time, more than what any smartphone battery can offer right now (the iPhone 4S offers around 8 hours on 3G, and 14 hours on 2G).

Features

Motorola's Smart Actions application is included, an improved version allowing users to configure settings for recurring tasks. The company claims up to 30 percent better battery life can be gained.

Another app is MotoCast, used for streaming and caching content from a computer to the phone. Interestingly, Motorola isn't launching a cloud service like some of its competitors and is instead allowing users to manage files from a computer.

The Motorola Droid Razr Maxx is available now for approximately £430, SIM-free.
