It's time to say goodbye to Winamp, as the famous media player will shut down on Dec. 20, after more than 15 years of activity.

Winamp first made its debut back in 1997 as a media player that allowed users to add skins to its interface, which set it apart from rivals. The media player had support for a slew of formats ranging from AAC, to MIDI or WAV, and soared in popularity in the late '90s, when MP3 file sharing boomed. Winamp was one of the quickest media players on the market and was used by virtually everyone.

AOL then purchased Winamp in 1999 in a $400 million deal and the media player sort of fell off the radar ever since. Sure, Winamp versions for Android and Mac launched years after the AOL acquisition, in 2010 and 2011, respectively, but Winamp never saw the same glory it used to enjoy. The high tide had passed and Winamp's popularity had already faded for the most part.

While Winamp was the greatest in the '90s, today's music scene is dominated by iTunes, streaming services such as Pandora, Spotify, and others such.

Winamp is now ready to face its end, shutting down on Dec. 20. The company decided not to make a big fuss despite the 15 years of activity. Instead, the closure announcement quietly appeared on Winamp's website on Wednesday, Nov. 20.

"Winamp.com and associated web services will no longer be available past December 20, 2013. Additionally, Winamp Media players will no longer be available for download. Please download the latest version before that date," reads the announcement. "Thanks for supporting the Winamp community for over 15 years."

In conclusion, those of you who would like to continue using Winamp are advised to download the latest version of the program and their desired skins before Dec. 20. If you're feeling nostalgic, you still have one month to grab some cool Winamp skins and plug-ins.

Some of today's teenagers may not have even heard of Winamp, but for those who rocked the media player through the '90s and then some more, this imminent shutdown marks the end of an era. RIP, Winamp.
