Rumors have been doing the rounds that Sony is working on a new 5-inch Xperia smartphone called the Xperia Yuga. The device is believed to be the company's flagship phone for 2013 and will pit itself against Samsung's best-selling Samsung Galaxy Note 2.

With the Xperia Yuga, Sony is looking to establish a strong footing in the bigger smartphone space. Whether Sony can take on the Galaxy Note 2 phablet and pull the rug from underneath Samsung's feet in the near future remains to be seen.

Here's a look at how two Android-powered smartphones, the Xperia Yuga and Galaxy Note 2, stack up against each other.

Processor

Per leaks, the Xpreia Yuga will feature a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, which is clocked at 1.5GHz. On the other hand, the Galaxy Note 2 has a powerful 1.6Ghz quad-core Exynos processor.

Display

It is rumored that the Xperia Yuga will feature a 5-inch display with White Magic RGB technology and 1200 x 1080 pixels resolution. According to Japan display Inc (JDI) the White Magic RGB display will consume up to 50 percent lesser power.

By comparison, the Galaxy Note 2 has a bigger 5.5-inch Super AMOLED screen with 1280 x 720 pixels resolution. However, the 443ppi of the Xperia Yuga clearly betters the Note 2's 267ppi.

Additionally, the Xperia Yuga it is rumored will be made of glass "front and back (shatter proof film both sides)," and will be dust proof and water resistant. The Galaxy Note has Gorilla Glass 2.

Storage and Memory

The Galaxy Note 2 is available in 16/32/64 GB of on-board storage options, and has an expandable memory option (of up to 64GB) via a microSD card. Details of the Xperia Yuga's storage memory are not yet known, but reports indicate that it will have 32GB of on-board storage.

The Galaxy Note 2 has 2GB of RAM and the Xperia Yuga too is expected to offer the same.

Software

The Galaxy Note 2 comes pre-loaded with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. The Xperia Yuga too is expected to run on the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean OS.

Battery

A 3100mAh battery powers the Galaxy Note 2, which supports up to 16 hours of talk time on 3G. The Xperia Yuga, according to leaks, will have a 2400mAh battery. It is not known how many hours of usage the device will support.

Camera

The Galaxy Note 2 has an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera, whereas rumors indicate that the Xperia Yuga will sport either a whopping 16-megapixel or 12-megapixel rear-facing snapper, clearly edging out the galaxy Note 2. Additionally, the Galaxy Note 2 has a 1.9-megapixel front-facing camera. Details of the Xperia Yuga's front-facing camera are not known.

Availability

The Galaxy Note 2 hit the U.S. shelves in October this year and it is speculated that the Xperia Yuga will release in March or April 2013.

Both the devices pack in robust features; however, time will tell whether Sony's Xperia Yuga will be able to eat into the Galaxy Note 2's market share and steal its thunder.
