While Fox passed on DC's "Black Lightning" in January this year, The CW soon picked up the show and ordered a pilot. Will Black Lightning be the newest character to join the CW's roster of superheroes?
According to Variety, the series, which was produced by Greg Berlanti ("Dawson's Creek," "Political Animals"), "was originally developed at FOX" but was later picked up for a pilot by the CW. If "Black Lightning" is picked up as a series, it will be the fifth show about a DC superhero on the network. The CW's "Arrow," "The Flash," "DC's Legends of Tomorrow," and "Supergirl" were all "renewed for the 2017-2018 season."
However, CW insiders have revealed that if "Black Lightning" is "greenlit for 2017-2018," all superhero shows on the network "would be staggered throughout the year" instead of having a schedule filled with "five separate nights of superhero programming."
The upcoming "Black Lightning" series is not the first show to join the CW after being part of another network. CBS' "Supergirl" moved to the CW when the show's first season struggled to maintain a large-enough audience. The CW then picked up "Supergirl" for its second season, which is currently doing well on the network. "Supergirl" is now second to the CW's top performing show "The Flash."
At the Television Critics Association press tour last year, Mark Pedowitz, the CW's chief, was asked about "the possibility of another superhero show" on the network. Pedowitz replied, "At the moment, we were only expecting to have four this season... At this time there's no real discussions about any other superhero characters, but one of the things about the Arrowverse... we get to see all these characters. Now, if someone pops, then you reexamine the situation, but at this time, there are no discussions with anybody else."
DC's "Black Lightning" focuses on Jefferson Pierce, a former superhero. But it looks like Pierce's daughter wants to follow in his footsteps and fight for justice. It looks like Black Lightning will soon (re)join the fray to protect his daughter and prevent a "star student" from "being recruited by a local gang." Black Lightning regularly encounters other DC characters such as Jimmy Olsen, Superman, and Batman, per Collider.
