"The Girl With All the Gifts" was a novel written by M.R. Carey that was published in 2014. It has recently been announced that the movie based on the hit zombie-themed book will finally be shown in U.S. cinemas later in February.
io9 has revealed that while "The Girl With All the Gifts" performed poorly in U.K. cinemas in September 2016, the movie will soon air in the U.S. on DirectTV in January. Despite the positive reception M.R. Carey's book received, it remains a mystery why the movie was not a hit in the U.K. as well.
The movie featured big stars such as Glenn Close ("Fatal Attraction," "101 Dalmatians"), Gemma Arterton ("Quantum of Solace," "Prince of Persia: Sands of Time"), Paddy Considine ("Hot Fuzz," "Blitz") and newcomer Sennia Nanua. "The Girl With All the Gifts" was directed by Colm McCarthy, who director season 2 of the show "Peaky Blinders," the episode "The Bells of St. John" for the hit sci-fi series "Doctor Who" and the film "Outcast."
Homeowners in the U.S. who are subscribed to DirectTV can view "The Girl With All the Gifts" on Jan. 26 and those who don't have access to DirectTV can watch the film in select theaters on Feb. 24. The movie will also be available as a digital download and on-demand.
In other news, IndieWire gave the movie adaptation of "The Girl With All the Gifts" a solid B in a review. In contrast with other zombie movies that present the undead as the antagonists, the movie based on Carey's book features Melanie, a little girl who does not realize who (or what) she really is.
The review praised Nanua who "delivers a startling performance by bringing a gentle quality to horrific circumstances." While the film admittedly resorted to standard zombie movie scenes such as being forced to journey amid the undead and splitting up, in the end, "The Girl With All the Gifts" presents "a fleshed-out world rich with eerie implications, saving the biggest one for the memorable finale."
