Members of the Church of Scientology gathered in San Diego for the grand opening of their "Ideal Org." The event was promised to be "of the highest profile" for its constituents, but Tom Cruise, one of the Church's most famous members, was not there.
"There had been lots of internal hype about the event," a source reportedly told Radar Online. "However, his [David Miscavige] former right hand, Tom, was conspicuously absent."
Due to this absence, news outlets were quick to speculate that "The Mummy" actor had finally officially decided to leave the Church. However, former Scientologist, Leah Remini recently spoke with Larry King and confirmed that the actor is "fully dedicated and loyal" to his religion.
"Tom and all Scientologists are taught to believe that people like me are, literally, the devil - that we mean them harm," she said. Remini is presently filming her A&E show, "Scientology and the Aftermath," which she claims to be an exposé.
Katie Holmes, Cruise's ex-wife, and a former Scientologist, will reportedly be free to speak about the religion in 2017. As reported by multiple news sources, the actress signed a settlement in 2012 that forbade her from speaking about her ex-husband or the Church of Scientology for five years. That contract is reportedly expiring this year, but it remains unclear whether Holmes will speak out or not.
However, Holmes was open to speaking to The New York Times about her daughter, Suri, and how the 10-year-old helped her in her directorial debut in "All We Had." "I want her to always know that she is the inspiration behind everything," she said.
Although Suri plays a big part in Holmes' motivation, the 38-year-old actress wants to minimize the little girl's exposure to the public eye. "I try to make our world very much an environment that is just all about being a kid without too much of Hollywood coming into that," she added.
