The iconic landmark Hollywood sign in Los Angeles was vandalized on New Year's Day by a prankster and altered it to "Hollyweed" according to a report by Bloomberg. It was restored a few hours later by park rangers.

The prankster climbed up a protective fence that surrounds the iconic landmark above Griffith Park and used giant tarps to alter the Os into Es. This was recorded by security cameras and the person who did this vandalism may face a misdemeanor trespassing charge, according to Sgt. Robert Payan.

The prank may have been a tribute to the voters of California that approved the Proposition 64 in November, which legalizes the recreational use of marijuana starting in 2018, while the drug remains illegal under U.S. federal law.

Famous rapper Snoop Dogg, posted a photo of the altered Hollywood sign with the caption, "#hollyweed - that's were I get my mail. #merryjane."

According to Reuters, a security camera caught footage of a person dressed in black around 3:00 a.m., whom the police believe was the person responsible for the vandalism.

Hikers and tourists used to be able to walk up the Hollywood sign to take pictures but now, a fence blocks access to the landmark and entering it is a challenge.

The sign originally read "Hollywoodland" overlooking California's heart of film-and-television and was built to advertise the name of a new housing development in the hills above the district of Los Angeles 1923. Parts of the sign deteriorated in the 1940s and the word "Hollywood" was kept and restored in 1978.

This prank was not the first though; a similar vandalism was done in Jan. 1, 1976, when a prankster named Daniel Finegood altered the sign with the use of curtains to make it read "Hollyweed."
