If warm, cuddly, and cutesy Christmas movies just aren't your thing, or if you've seen too much holiday tinsel and are now in desperate need of something psychologically disturbing, Netflix's The OA might just be the show for you.
The OA (or "Original Angel") is described as an American fantasy drama series, co-created and executively produced by Brit Marling (who also plays lead protagonist Prarie Johnson) and Zat Bagmanglij. Equal parts philosophical thriller and sci-fi lover's fantasy, The OA is - quite literally - an original series unlike any other.
Spoiler alert ahead for a brief synopsis, but nothing too in-depth.
The series focuses on lead girl Prarie Johnson as she recounts her period of captivity to a group of curious misfits, including a high school professor (played by Phyllis Smith) and your classic drowning-in-vices teenage douchebag (played by Patrick Gibson). According to Wired, hers is a classic girl-goes-missing tale with just enough twists to keep it interesting. For one, Johnson left home as a relatively normal blind girl and returned seven years later with 20/20 vision and strange scars on her back.
For another, this 28-year-old supposed angel can cheat death.
The sci-fi elements we hinted at earlier come into play when explaining exactly how she manages to bypass death, and it's her fantastical saved-by-the-cosmos abilities that capture the attention of the mad scientist (Jason Isaacs) who eventually captures her.
All technical and mystery-thriller elements aside, the show's main thesis isn't about time travel, existential-plane-hopping, or astral projection. It's about the importance of questioning - or so Polygon writes in their review. A philosophical series that that explores identity and testing the border of life and death, The OA is written in such a way that every theory or conclusion you draw must be questioned. Even elements of the story are presented as fact will eventually be questioned later on.
Eight episodes make up the entire series, and all eight are available for streaming on Netflix as of December 16 this year.
