Grand Theft Auto V was one of the most highly-anticipated games of this year and the latest installment made a whopping $800 million on launch day.
It's no big news that Grand Theft Auto (GTA) is incredibly popular, but the latest installment in the franchise set a new record. In fact, GTA V has now broken the record for the most money a video game made in a single day, dethroning Call of Duty.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 made its debut back in November last year and brought home a staggering $500 million on launch day. It now appears that GTA V is even more popular, breaking new records for entertainment launches when it made its debut on Sept. 17. Its publisher, Take Two, has proudly announced the impressive achievement on Wednesday, Sept. 18.
"All of us at Take-Two are thrilled with the initial response to Grand Theft Auto V." Once again, the team at Rockstar Games have outdone themselves, setting the entertainment industry's new standard for creativity, innovation and excellence," said Take-Two chief Strauss Zelnick in the press release.
"Beginning at midnight on Monday, consumers around the world gathered in anticipation to be among the first to experience the evolution of this remarkable series. In North America alone, more than 8,300 stores opened their doors at midnight to welcome fans whose loyalty and enthusiasm were rewarded with what the New York Times called 'the most immersive spectacle in interactive entertainment.' We are incredibly proud of Rockstar Games' creative achievement and could not be more pleased with the success of this launch."
GTA V is yet to make its debut in Japan and Brazil, where it will most likely make even more money. Moreover, the latest GTA installment is set to rake in a few more millions when it becomes available on PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 (PS4), although the company has not announced those versions yet.
"Launched on September 17 for the PlayStation 3 computer entertainment system and the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, the title has already received widespread critical acclaim and achieved first day sell-through of more than $800 million worldwide, excluding the upcoming launch in Japan and Brazil, according to Company estimates," boasts the press release.
The Grand Theft Auto games have always been incredibly popular and greatly controversial. The latest iteration in the franchise is no different, but early reviews seem to praise the game and the whopping sales on launch day confirm its success.
