Looking at Samsung's plans ahead, it wouldn't be surprising if one confuse the cellular device for a tablet in the future as the company is reportedly developing the next-generation Galaxy Note 3 with a 6.3-inch screen using an OLED display.
Samsung has been experimenting on the wider-screen size devices which some refer to as the 'phablet' segment. Samsung's initiative was well welcomed when it released the 5.3 inch Galaxy Note. The next iteration, Galaxy Note 2 saw its display grow to 5.5 inches and the device just become more popular than its predecessor.
The new rumors come from The Korea Times which claims that Samsung is reducing its investment in its liquid crystal display (LCD) unit and the focus is rather shifted to organic light-emitting diode (OLED) and plastic-based flexible displays.
Meanwhile, Samsung has shown off a new Game Pad during its Galaxy S4 launch, which has an expanding clamp designed to accommodate screen sizes larger than the S4's 5-inch. This Game Pad is not just made for Galaxy S4 alone as the company said it works for screens of 4- to 6.3-inches. The official mention about the 6.3 inches device goes in line with the already-heard rumor that Samsung's Note 3 will be the large-screen device in question.
''The real problem is that major television markets like the United States remain sluggish. This is much worse than display-making manufacturers expected. In contrast, the demand for tablets is increasing and that market will see further explosive demand growth next year,'' an unnamed Samsung official was quoted as saying to the Korea Times.
As the hype around Note 3 grows, we hear a couple of contradicting rumors about the upcoming device. According to a recent report, Galaxy Note 3 was rumored to turn to an LCD instead of AMOLED to provide an improved S-Pen experience for its users. "The Samsung top brass is in the process of making a final decision on what kind of screen to be used for the Galaxy Note 3. The tipster feels that LCD by Sharp is the best LCD display ever and that Samsung could make the S-Pen experience better with LCD than with AMOLED/PHOLED," the report said.
A few days before this rumor, The Korea Times had reported that Note 3 will feature a 5.9-inch OLED display. The report speculated that Samsung will release the large sized device in the latter half of the year to solidify its leading position in the rapidly-growing phablet market.
