With the highly anticipated PlayStation 4 launch event out of the way, the focus has turned towards the PlayStation Plus subscription service, and fans won’t be disappointed as there much more information to it now.
Per reports, in a recent interview, Sony Europe CEO Jim Ryan has confirmed that the company hasn't forgotten the previously revealed PlayStation Plus subscription service, and that it has a “prominent role” with the new PlayStation 4.
The information was revealed by Ryan while he was in an interview with the PlayStation Blog about further development in the recent PlayStation 4 gaming console. At the same time he also reminded everyone that the company is not willing to reveal anything prematurely.
On being asked by PlayStation Blog’s Michael Denny as to how Ryan sees the PlayStation Plus service evolving over the next couple of years as PlayStation 4 enters the ecosystem, Ryan replied:
“We’re very happy with the service that we’ve been able to offer with PS Plus. It’s been really well received – the value is quite extraordinary and the take-up has trebled over the course of the past year. We definitely see that as a core part of the way forward.
“We’re not yet in a position to disclose our plans for the future of PlayStation Plus but there will definitely be a prominent role to play for it in the PlayStation 4 landscape.”
Although the confirmation was not something that was actually not expected, Sony had already made everyone quite clear about the company’s plan by previously saying that it plans to make every PlayStation 4 game available digitally, of course with a subscription service on the cards.
Moreover, it’s not hard, per The Verge, “to imagine it being rolled into PlayStation Plus as a variation of the instant games model.”
Ryan, in the same interview also confirmed that the company was not thinking about abandoning the current generation PlayStation 3, “though it admitted it could be discontinued somewhat faster than the PS2, which is still on sale in some regions — so we could also potentially see three different platforms on Plus at the same time.”
