Just as Apple released the much-awaited iOS 6.1 for iPhones, iPads, and iPod Touches, it seems a new Apple TV is on the way. According to a new collection of FCC documents, Apple is reportedly preparing a slightly smaller, but more powerful new model with a new processor and wireless chip.
Though the diagram (given below) filed with the FCC does not indicate any major changes in the appearance of the new device, it does suggest a slightly smaller measurement - 93.78mm square compared to the 98mm of the current model, Engadget noted. A1469 has been confirmed as the new model number.
Taking a detailed look at the filings and the source code, Anandtech reports the new Apple TV 3.2 will use the s5l8947x 'A5x' processor, the same chip used in the third-generation iPad. As the old model's A5 'revision 2′ gives way for A5X, the model is expected to provide better user experience, feature a smoother UI and improved app performance.
In yet another significant addition, the new model will be using the new low-power dual-band 40nm Broadcom BCM4334 chip, which is being used in new iDevices like the iPhone 5. It's a major update (from BCM4330).
"Inside however from what we can glean from the FCC documents there's no longer a two antenna solution for the BCM4330 WiFi+BT combo, but rather a single antenna solution with different gain and utilizing a BCM4334 combo instead. This is the same WLAN+BT combo as used in the iPhone 5 and basically all of the newly refreshed iDevices, and is built on a 40nm RF CMOS process," Anandtech reported.
The fact that the antennas present in the old models were a part of the Apple TV PCB, the documents do indicate that the new Apple TV model uses a single PIFA (Planar Inverted F Antenna).
Same as other typical FCC disclosures, there is a request for confidentiality and so, not many details are available at this point in time. However, this silent update when read and understood together with the recent addition of Bluetooth keyboard support sheds the possibility of Apple coming out with a long-awaited 'breakthrough' control method for the device. In addition, the frequent leaks do suggest an imminent release or at least an official announcement in the coming days.
