Xiaomi Joins Samsung, Huawei & Apple By Manufacturing Its Own Pinecone Chips For Mi 6; Scraps Dependency On Qualcomm Processors
Regin OlimberioDue to subsequent handicaps, Xiaomi is taking a proactive stance and will manufacture its own mobile chips soon. Several sources revealed that Xiaomi is already in the final stages of development and will unveil its "Pinecone" processors next month.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Xiaomi owns a sizeable stake at Beijing-based Pinecone Electronics which had earlier amassed mobile chip technology from Leadcore. The company is also seeking for easier patents and smooth transactions since Leadcore Technology is a subsidiary of state-owned Datang Telecom. It is also apparent that Xiaomi targets to become less dependent from third-party suppliers by integrating both hardware and software production.
What prompts Xiaomi to become independent is Qualcomm's vast clientele. Since every Android-based smartphone are relying on Qualcomm, next generation models usually suffer delay in production in cases of supply disruption due to patent issues.
There are instances as well where smartphone manufacturers are being held back to develop better devices due to Qualcomm's late development. In the case of LG Watch Sport, Qualcomm 28nm processor Snapdragon Wear 2100 SoC was used. This caused controversy because LG Watch suffered poor battery life and the suspect to such result is the outdated 2100 SoC which was last seen in 2013.
This handicap of over-dependency to Qualcomm is not a problem among manufacturers with their own chip production line. Apple has their own processors for iOS while Samsung and Huawei have their own high-end chips as well for Android. The advantage of building an independent chip often results to faster performance and longer battery life. Apple Watch Series 2 uses 16nm chips that are more power efficient.
Fans need not wait too long for this Pinecone processors, according to hints from IBTimes. There are indications that the upcoming Xiaomi Mi 6 is already scheduled for end of February or early March release. Other guess suggests April since Xiaomi did not schedule for Mobile World Congress 2017 which is happening on Feb. 28.
