Don't Get Excited With Samsung Galaxy S8's 6.2-Inch Display; Observers Fear Quick Battery Life
Regin OlimberioThe month-long leaks for the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S8 are all rainbows and fanfares, but there are a few details that made observers lift their fingers. Techies are looking into the Galaxy S8 display and battery correlation and its significant impact over the new line of high-end Samsung flagship.
First, the sizes of the current Galaxy S7 and its Edge variant could be retained for the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus. However, the new offerings are pegged to sport 5.8-inch and 6.2-inch displays respectively. Samsung managed to squeeze in these massive display without changing the chassis size by cutting back the old top and bottom bezels.
According to Korean outfit News1, they obtained the information about the chassis size from accessory manufacturers who were given a heads-up about the Galaxy S8 features. This is to let accessory makers sell their respective products in time with the Samsung release.
The bittersweet news is the impact of display size into the battery of Galaxy S8. Logically, better display calls for heavier resources and more juice. Remember that S8 will allegedly feature an unchanged 3000mAh capacity while Plus variant has 3500mAh lithium-ion. These amount of juice will significantly drain faster with scaled-up display unless Samsung decides to pack up at least 500mAh more for both variants.
Currently, Samsung is finalizing a deal with Sony-Murata for high-performance batteries as mentioned in a previous Mobile&Apps report. The Galaxy S8 calls for topnotch performance after all because it intends to be the next-generation flagship after the failed Galaxy Note 7.
At any rate, it is a relief that other parts of Galaxy S8 features efficient battery consumption. While display is still the number one culprit in terms of battery life, Samsung is fielding in its new Exynos and Snapdragon chipsets to save some juice.
