Double Fine's highly anticipated platform video game "Psychonauts 2" has picked the makers of "Payday 2" and "Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons" Starbreeze Studios as its new publisher. The studio is taking over the marketing and distribution for the game, which will be released in 2018 on PlayStation 4, PC and Xbox One.
Double Fine founder Tim Schafer the partnership with Starbreeze for their crowd-funded sequel in a new developer video that also features a new footage of the game. "We are excited to be working with them because they are from a development background just like us, and so they know where we're coming from," Schafer said in the video. He also unveiled the details of the story for "Psychonauts 2" in a Reddit AMA.
Schafer had initially expressed his desires to make the sequel to the original "Psychonauts" but the financial demand of developing the sequel has put their attempts off. Following the original game's strong sales throughout several outlets alongside the huge demand from fans, Double Fine sought to obtain part of its financial capital through a crowdfunding and investment drive on Fig.
GameSpot reports that Starbreeze Studios is investing $8 million USD in the production before recouping the 100 percent of its full investment, which includes marketing expenses with an initial profits share of 85 percent following the distribution as well as platform costs. The studio will then receive 60 percent of the profits after the investment is recouped, according to a report.
However, Double Fine retains the rights to develop "Psychonauts 2" and will continue to own the intellectual property (IP). More than 24,000 fans have donated almost $4 million to make it happen and Double Fine also put in some of its finances.
"Psychonauts 2" was announced in December at The Game Awards 2016. The player controls Raz, who is a newly graduated Psychonaut that has powerful psychic capabilities as he explores into others minds.
