MacBook Pro With Touch Bar Banned For People Appearing Upcoming State Bar Exams

Catherine G.

The latest MacBook Pros come with a Touch Bar on the upper side of the keyboard and add class to Apple's flagship laptops which do not come easy anyway. However, there is a big drawback of owning one of these latest devices: the users need to either completely disable the Touch Bar on their Macbook Pro or they won't be allowed to use the gadget while taking the state bar exam in order to become a certified lawyer. In some states, there is a complete ban on such new model of MacBook Pro.

This step has been taken by the state bar exam authorities after an announcement was made by Examsoft, a testing software company that speculated that "exam integrity" will disintegrate due to the Touch Bar's predictive text feature.

So, if the happy users of a MacBook Pro with Touch Bar are planning to bring their laptop to a state bar examination center in some of the states (for example, Carolina), they should be aware of the presence of additional test proctors. These people have been instructed to look for such MacBook Pro models with Touch Bar and if they do find one, there will be specialists present to make sure that the feature is disabled completely. Test takers can only use the laptop in their exams if they follow certain instructions published by ExamSoft.

These instructions make the Touch Bar act like a row of standard function keys alone. However, as mentioned before, some states (including New York and Colorado as per the notices of New York State Board of Law Examiners and Colorado Supreme Court) completely ban the new model of MacBook Pro. If the users show up with such new models, they will only write their answers by hand but they may be allowed to download the ExamSoft software on another machine for free. However, this has to be done in advance.

Some states have not issued formal notices yet but this Tocu Bar may also be outrightly banned in California, Oklahoma, Massachusetts, West Virginia and Pennsylvania, too! So here is an advice to all law students and prospective state bar exam takers: please check with your local authorities about the permission of using the new MacBook Pro or you may repent it later.
