Nintendo Switch vs Wii U: Questions Remain On Backwards Compatibility, Online Playing Cost & Performance
Ritwik RoyThe Nintendo Switch is uniquely Nintendo and is an innovative and convincing upgrade on the Wii U console. However, it may not be the revolutionary device some expected from Switch. There are many questions that are still unanswered. It is unknown how much players will have to shell out to play online and whether Nintendo will bring backwards compatibility to it. It will be interesting to see how powerful the console will be than Nintendo Wii U. Even with Nintendo Switch, the biggest selling point would be the gaming credentials.
According to Forbes, the Nintendo Switch costs just $299.99, which is the same as the basic version of Wii U when it was first launched. However, Nintendo Switch users will get those Joy-Con controllers and also a Switch Dock. The cost of the Switch may increase though as extra Joy-Con controllers cost $49.99 each or $79.99 for a pair. Plus, there are various other add-ons that hardcore gamers will require. This will all add up to the cost. Even though Nintendo pricing for online play is free till fall, it won't be free forever.
In terms of battery life, the Nintendo Switch is fitted with a much bigger and better battery than the Wii U. The Wii U battery was a major problem at first as it was only 1,500 mAh. It was bumped up to 2,550 mAh, which increased stamina from three hours to five to eight hours. Switch's 4,210 mAh battery may last for six hours but is again dependent on the games being played and console use. It won't last six hours if playing games like "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild."
Moreover, there is no battery replacement option in Nintendo Switch as it has a non-removable battery. Paid replacement is available via Nintendo Customer Support. The USB-C connector is replaceable though. Even though Nintendo has promised 1080p gaming when Switch is docked and connected to the TV via HDMI cable, it is not known how the console's performance will go past the Wii U. The Switch is smaller than Wii U GamePad but the display is significantly better than the Wii U console.
