Nintendo Switch: New Online Service Will Follow; Console Does Not Support Miiverse, 3DS StreetPass Features
Caitlin MooreThe new Nintendo Switch console ditched the social media platform called Miiverse and the Nintendo 3DS StreetPass feature. Though this may be unfortunate to some players, the Japan-based electronics and software company is said to launch a new online service that would let players enjoy multiplayer online gaming. Expected to begin in March, the service will also come with a dedicated smartphone app that may allow players to communicate with other gamers through their mobile devices.
Nintendo of America Assistant Manager of Public Relations David Young confirmed that the new console will not include the Miiverse and 3DS StreetPass during the event held for Nintendo Switch in New York. As per Venturebeat, Switch is designed to be a home console and not portable device, which could be the reason why it ditched the 3DS StreetPass feature.
As for the Miiverse, Nintendo seems to be replacing it with another online service where players will be given the chance to engage in online gaming that will come free for Nintendo account holders for the first few weeks. However, it will become a paid service when it officially launches in fall.
Meanwhile, the companion smartphone app that will be delivered along with the new online service can be connected to the Nintendo Switch in order to perform online functions such as inviting friends, setting play appointments and chatting with friends. Players can download the app until summer for free. More information about the new online service can be found on the official page of Nintendo.
The company has not announced how much the new service will cost when it launches in fall. However, as Time pointed out, Sony and Microsoft's online services cost $59.99 annually. Could Nintendo's online service cost the same?
It is also important to note that the new online service is only for Nintendo Switch. The online play systems of Wii U and Nintendo 3DS will not be affected by the switch. In the meantime, tell us what you think of the forthcoming Nintendo Switch online service in our comments section below.
